Do you think we deserve effective psychotherapy in the NHS?

February 22nd, 2007 · 7 Comments

I’ve been very helpfully informed about a petition (which is running until 3rd March 2007) on the Government’s website which anyone interested in effective therapy should sign. Pass this around if you agree and get as many signatures as possible
The motion is this:
“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to consider other psychotherapy approaches, not […]

Waste in the NHS

January 26th, 2007 · 3 Comments

I’m not quite sure why I haven’t noticed this before but here is an excellent video from the very beginning of this year about wasted money in the NHS, much thanks to Burning Our Money for this.
The other videos are also worth watching - but I can’t sit down to more than one at once […]

MindFields is now a preferred trainer for the Ministry of Defence

January 4th, 2007 · No Comments

Great new developments today, as we’ve just heard from the MOD that we are now one of their preferred educators!
This means that one of the ways in which they can fulfil their pledge for encouraging and funding life-long education of all their staff is by recommending people to attend MindFields College courses.
It will also help […]

Thinking ahead..

January 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

What are you imagining for 2007?
About 40,000 years ago the human brain suddenly developed the capacity to make a mental image of the future, an essential tool for imagination and creativity.
A team at Washington university report that they have been able to capture with MRI scans which areas of the brain (the left lateral premotor […]

The treatment of anxiety disorders/Burning Our Money

December 15th, 2006 · No Comments

Next week I’ll be interested to watch a program on Channel 4 about several people with severe agoraphobia being treated with a “revolutionary” new treatment. See here to read an archived Human Givens Journal article about how two counsellors researched the ‘rewind technique’ for treating phobias, trauma and panic attacks (all problems stemming from anxiety), […]

A breeding ground for crime

November 29th, 2006 · No Comments

The crucial question of “how should street crime be tackled?” has risen again after the sentencing of those responsible for killing the young London lawyer Thomas Rhys Pryce.  Donnel Carty (aged 19) and Delano Brown (aged 18) robbed Pryce of his mobile phone before stabbing him in the heart.
It’s very interesting to read on the BBC […]

Mental Health Bill 2004 still fails to acknowledge or promote the importance of meeting emotional needs

November 27th, 2006 · 1 Comment

The proposed Mental Health Bill 2004 still has some serious flaws.
The Government needs to go back to the basic principles of primary care: helping people get their innate physical and emotional needs met. These needs, the ‘human givens’, are each individual’s genetic inheritance. (Our biology determines that we cannot avoid needing food, water, attention, status, […]

The UK needs more than ‘Supernannies’

November 23rd, 2006 · 2 Comments

A few weeks ago it emerged that the Youth Justice system in the UK has reached a crisis point - with literally only a few beds available.
In response, the Government is targeting parents with their £4 million “super nannies” scheme - which will install 80 child psychologists in high crime areas to teach parents good […]

Ministers disguise conviction-based policies as evidence-based

November 15th, 2006 · 1 Comment

“At best, ministers and shadow spokesmen cannot distinguish between anecdote and science. At worst, they can be dodgy operators who use research selectively to “prop up” policies, or even fraudsters who think nothing of scientific malpractice.”
Roger Highfield at the Daily Telegraph yesterday does not let slip by a report by the Commons Science and […]
