Improving emotional health and wellbeing
– essential psychological skills training

Why is this qualification different?

For a long time confusion has reigned in psychotherapy and counselling about how to treat people effectively – why else would there be so many different models to choose from?

To make psychotherapy and counselling more consistently effective a larger bio-psycho-social model – a bigger organising idea – was evidently needed, one that integrated the major scientific findings of recent decades with the best of effective therapeutic practice from diverse disciplines (including cognitive behavioural therapy, solution-focussed and other proven techniques) into a more holistic, flexible and far-reaching approach.

The human givens framework is such a 'model', it enables us to see where a person's life is not working well and to tailor solutions for each individual using a combination of effective psychological interventions (informed by the very latest reseach), education and direct practical help, as appropriate. The insights the approach brings into what we all need to live fulfilled, satsifying lives also bring clarity to the much-used phrase 'wellbeing' and point to concrete ways of achieving and maintaining such a state.

The highly-praised Diploma in Human Givens Psychotherapy was the first qualification to combine all of these elements in this way. It is now been joined by the MA in Human Givens Psychotherapy. Both incorporate the latest neuro-physiological and psychological discoveries with the necessary skills training to ensure their graduates can more reliably produce effective treatment outcomes (all graduates are encouraged to work in an outcome-informed way).

It is a practical and powerfully effective training format for brief psychotherapy and counselling. And the often startling success produced by the efficacy, adaptability and practical nature of the human givens approach and the new insights and models for effective therapy it encompases, is borne out by the speed at which the approach is moving into new areas, ranging from psychotherapy, education and social work to international diplomatic relations and the corporate world of business (see the Human Givens Institute's online archive and An Idea in Practice: Using the human givens approach, for a wide range of examples).

“A background knowledge of how human beings function, derived from studies in psychology, biology and mind/body connections, is essential for therapists. We should never stop learning. This is why the human givens approach to therapy is so important. Not only does it have enormous cost saving benefits for the psychotherapy field, but it is an open and evolving concept that frees us to see more clearly what really works and why, and thus empowers us to be more effective when relieving distress.”
